In addition to defending privacy, the ACLU has played a crucial role in protecting free speech on the Internet. In the 90s, when the Web was in its infancy, Congress passed the Communications Decency Act, which would have regulated the Internet the way the FCC regulates television. Thanks to the ACLU, the US Supreme Court ruled that the CDA was unconstitutional.
