00:06 - Apple speaker A (Announcement)
This is twit.

00:11 - Leo Laporte (Host)
This is twit news number 404, recorded monday, june 10th 2024. Hello everybody, leo laporte with micah sargent as we prepare for apple's w WWDC 2024 keynote, and it's going to be very interesting. First of all, you should have a scorecard with everything Mark Gurman predicted, because on Sunday, in fact, john Gruber at Daring Fireball said how did he know all this? We'd never heard any of this before. He thought Mark has somebody inside Apple who's seen the video that we're about to see. He also said Apple's hopping mad. This wasn't an intentional leak. His sources say they're hopping mad, hopping mad. We will be streaming the keynote and talking over it. So if you want to see it clean, go to Apple on YouTube or on Applecom and watch it there, because we're going to comment on it.

01:02
This is a challenge for Apple today, I think, no matter what happens to stock market tanks, because it's either going to look like, oh, we're catching up to Google and Microsoft doing the same things they're doing, or they're not going to do anything at all. I think one school of thought mine says they shouldn't say anything about AI. Just go iOS 18, macos Shasta here we go. Somewhere over California there goes AI.

01:34 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Biggest day of the year. Who's fired up? Vision Pro Beth is fired up. Doctor Rockwell. Rockwell and Vision Pro One more thing, just have fun out there, that eye gaze was totally enhanced.

01:51 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I'm getting too old for this stuff.

01:53 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Oh, look at the classic iPod.

01:55 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I wonder if Phil Schiller is actually a pilot.

01:59 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Google did this, by the way, I just want to point out, for real, sergey Brin parachuted out of an airplane onto the Googleplex for Google IO one year. Actually, it was at Urbaban Center in San Francisco.

02:14 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
So again you see, oh, I like the helmet, oh, the helmet with the hair.

02:20 - Leo Laporte (Host)
All inside jokes. Now who's driving the plane?

02:25 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
That's Schiller. That's what I said. I wonder if Schiller is an actual. I know he's not piloting, but I wonder.

02:29 - Leo Laporte (Host)
But Phil Schiller was piloting up there.

02:32 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Oh, they turned off airplane mode. Also, they've been doing things that the Apple Watch and the iPhone can do, like they unlocked that back door by putting the watch up, right.

02:41 - Leo Laporte (Host)
And the altitude.

02:49 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Vision OS, ios tvOS, the watch up right and the altitude, vision os, ios, tv os, watch os. I wonder if they'll ipad os and, of course, mac os. I wonder if they'll start with vision os then. And there's, oh, now tim's on top of the roof. So cool, tim's on the so good morning, welcome to.

02:59 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I wonder if he really is the last time you could join us with jackson, she was to be an action-packed and memorable WWDC.

03:08 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Wwdc marks a moment in the year when we're able to celebrate our global developer community. Developers continue to amaze us with the apps they create for our products, apps that are used by over a billion people around the world by over a billion people around the world. It's important for us to provide this community with the newest tools and technologies to do their very best work. Today, we're going to have some incredible updates to our platforms, and I'm excited that we'll introduce profound new intelligence capabilities that we hope will inspire developers, delight users and make our platforms even smarter and more useful than ever.

They've got to look like they're doing something innovative with AI Almost. Here's Apple's challenge. They've got to look like they're doing something innovative with AI Almost impossible, unless they have some secret project that they're going to unveil At this point. I really think this is a very big challenge for Apple.

05:17 - Apple speaker C (Host)
Our existence is all about choices. I just need to get to the truth. It's weird.

05:21 - Leo Laporte (Host)
They're starting with Apple TV content. I think they did that last year, did they? This has nothing to do with developers. Developers have no interest in this and we don't think they're going to announce a new Apple TV. We are not finished. This is just an ad.

05:35 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yes, leave the silo.

05:41 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Which normally, if I had ads, I would be doing our ad. Right, I do like Slow Horses. Recommend that For sure. He's marvelous.

05:53 - Mikah Sargent (Host)

06:11 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
You're so right. Look Too tired to try to make it in.

06:13 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Hollywood now. They're just going to take Apple money and coast. Oh, there's a young person, scarlett Johansson. Scarlett Johansson Interesting Ad. So there's a young person, scarlett.

06:24 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Johansson, scarlett Johansson, interesting Her. Admit it, it's cool. Okay, fine, it was very cool. Sam Altman was in the audience cringing when Scarlett Johansson appeared.

06:32 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
This lineup looks incredible, waz is there.

06:34 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
I hope you're as excited about these Apple Originals as I am Altman has the double collar going. And now let's turn to our platforms. Platforms we have so much to talk about today, we'll start with our OS announcements, and then we'll dive deeper into intelligence. Let's start with our newest operating system.

06:59 - Mikah Sargent (Host)

07:20 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Vision Pro has inspired developers to create amazing and unique virtual apps that aren't possible on any other platform.

07:26 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
He said we've got to make that eye gaze better.

07:27 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
That's like NBA, where you can watch multiple live games with stats. What if? Where you become a superhero in the Marvel Universe, and Unextinct, where you can explore endangered species Games that take advantage of your space. I wish Black Box was out when we did the review. Challenge you in new ways.

07:46 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
Challenge you in new ways, or let you gather around a table to play with friends, even when you're not together. You can master meditation with Poe from Kung Fu Panda. My greatest dream Bring your data to life with.

08:01 - Leo Laporte (Host)
SAP Some nice-looking pins.

08:02 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
this year at WWDC, and doctors can even reimagine surgical simulation and planning. New apps, including some from the world's biggest names in entertainment productivity and gaming, are arriving on the App Store every day. There's already over 2,000 apps created specifically for Apple, Vision Pro and with over 1.5 million compatible iPhone and iPad apps, there's always something new to do.

08:30 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Remember, this is theoretically a developer conference.

08:33 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
It's been made possible by Vision OS. It's been just four months since we launched Vision Pro and Vision OS, and today we're already announcing our first major update, introducing VisionOS 2. Wow, all right, so they're going straight to VisionOS 2 propels spatial computing forward with new ways to connect with your most important memories, great enhancements to productivity and powerful new developer APIs for immersive shared experiences. To tell you more, here's Haley immersive shared experiences.

09:07 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
To tell you more, here's Haley Vision. Os 2 is a great release with some big updates.

09:11 - Apple speaker G (Announcement)
Let's start with photos. Spatial computing has reinvented how you view your photos. There's nothing like seeing them life-size with incredible fidelity. Spatial photos are even more powerful, bringing life and realism to your favorite moments with family and friends. It's incredibly moving to step back into a treasured memory, and the rich visual depth of spatial photos makes this possible.

09:35
Now, vision OS 2 lets you do something truly amazing with the photos already in your library, with just the tap of a button, advanced machine learning derives both a left and right eye view from your beautiful 2D image, creating a spatial photo with natural depth that looks stunning.

09:52 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
So you can take the photos that you already have and convert them into.

09:56 - Apple speaker G (Announcement)
Kind of could do that before with the screen wallpaper, and now you can experience all your panoramas and spatial photos and videos together with the people you love, using SharePlay in the Photos app. With our new spatial personas, it feels like they are sitting right next to you.

10:14 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Sorry, can you believe it. I'm trying really hard not to say anything negative.

10:18 - Apple speaker G (Announcement)
People are amazed at how easy it is to navigate Vision Pro with just their eyes, hands and voice.

10:23 - Leo Laporte (Host)
But I am glad that Mom Jeans are back. I am glad about that.

10:25 - Apple speaker G (Announcement)
And with Vision OS 2, we've made it even easier. Now you can just hold your hand up and tap to open Home View or flip your hand over to bring up time and battery level. And tap again to open Control Center, giving you quick access to frequently used features like notifications and Mac Virtual Display. People love Mac Virtual Display because it lets them bring their Mac wirelessly into Vision Pro just by looking at it, giving them a large private and portable 4K display Later this year.

10:55
It gets even better with higher display resolution and size, and it can be expanded even further into an ultra-wide display that wraps around you, equivalent to two 4K monitors side by side. Your content stays sharp wherever you look, thanks to dynamic foveation performed on the Mac. Another great thing about Apple Vision Pro is how incredible it is to use on a plane, letting you take a private movie theater wherever you go. With Vision OS 2, we're adding train support to travel mode, so you can work privately on your long commute or catch up on your favorite shows on a massive screen.

11:32 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Next year.

11:33 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
What does that even mean? How is it different? Well, you remember the airplane mode.

11:37 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Oh, that's a good question.

11:38 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I guess trains don't move as fast. So maybe, and there's probably more rumble- up and down, in addition to these great features, and there's probably more rumble up and down on the train.

11:45 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
Who knows? We'll never know.

11:46 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I'm just going to put train support question mark in my notes.

11:50 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
There are many new frameworks and APIs for developers to explore, like advanced volumetric APIs that allow even the most complex 3D apps to run side-by-side for the ultimate multitasking experience. Tabletop Kit makes it possible for developers to quickly create apps that anchor to flat surfaces like manufacturing workstations or board and card games and are great for use with spatial personas on FaceTime, and enterprise-specific APIs that will enable powerful use cases like surgical training in healthcare, equipment maintenance and manufacturing and beyond. These new APIs and frameworks will unlock exciting opportunities for developers to create truly unique experiences. We're also making it easier for people to create new spatial content for Apple Vision Pro, like spatial video. We've made it so easy to capture spatial video anywhere with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It's one of the best ways to relive meaningful moments in your life. Spatial video can also be used by pro videographers to tell powerful brand product and creative stories To make. Creating and sharing spatial videos with commercial audience easier.

13:15 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Canon will offer a brand new spatial lens for their popular EOS R7 digital camera, so they've had a dual lens, but that's an interesting one because it's a little smaller.

13:20 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
Even under the most challenging lighting conditions. Spatial videos can then be edited in Final Cut Pro for Mac and shared and viewed in the new Vimeo app for Vision OS. Wow, this new professional workflow will be available this fall.

13:35
Last year we also introduced Apple Immersive Video a game-changing entertainment app created just for Vision Pro. Apple Immersive Videos are 180-degree 8K recordings with spatial audio that give you mind-blowing experiences with lifelike fidelity. It truly feels like you are there. To enable creators to bring their own stories to life with Apple Immersive Video, we've partnered first with Blackmagic Design, a leading innovator in creative video technology, to build a new production workflow consisting of Blackmagic cameras, davinci Resolve Studio and Apple Compressor. These will all be available to creators later this year and there's new Apple Immersive.

14:22
Video content on the way including a new Extreme Sports series with Red Bull Reimagined experiences from the world's biggest artists, like the Weeknd. And our first scripted Apple Immersive short film Submerged from Oscar-winning director Adam Mercer, these titles and more will be available on the TV app. So that's what's coming to Apple Vision Pro and Vision OS. The hard thing about jump-starting is it's such a different technology you really have to kick it into high gear yourself.

14:54 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Notice. No message for developers at all this is almost entirely for content creators.

15:02 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Just the yeah volumetric APIs, tabletop kit and enterprise APIs. That was for developers. Also, it said mouse support, which it did not originally have.

15:08 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
As you can see, we're continuing to push Vision OS forward, as well as providing new content and capabilities for Apple Vision.

15:14 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Pro, it's too valuable.

15:16 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
I've been hearing from people all over the world about their interest in this incredible product.

15:26 - Leo Laporte (Host)
So I'm happy to announce we're bringing apple vision pro to these eight countries next, finally, starting with china, japan and there were rumors china june 28th and australia canada, france germany and the united kingdom on july 12th.

15:39 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Now here's craig to tell you all about what's coming in ios yeah, anthony, I had a feeling you'd be excited about mouse support.

15:47 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
He wants mouse support. Yeah, I mean, I wanted it too. It was odd to me that it wasn't there.

15:56 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
When you're using the Mac virtual display, it would be easier on the mouse iOS 18 is a big release that delivers more ways to customize your iPhone, stay connected and relive special moments Now remember they're going to do intelligence at the end. First, let's talk about a set of features that give you exciting new ways to personalize your iPhone further, starting with your home screen. You can already customize your home screen with your favorite wallpaper, apps and widgets, letting your personality shine through.

16:26
And now your app icons and widgets can add even more. Let me show you, Please do. I have this photo I love as my wallpaper and now I can continue to enjoy it when I unlock my iPhone because I can arrange my apps and widgets to frame it perfectly. I can select them all and easily place them.

16:48 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Let me do this for the audience really quick. Android did it first. Okay, good First they did.

16:56 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Years and years ago. That's interesting and check this out.

16:58 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
We have an awesome new look for app icons. When we go into dark mode, let's turn it on. The problem is, this is a mature product for app icons when we go into dark mode.

17:05 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Let's turn it on, isn't that cool? The problem is, this is a mature product, and so nothing you're going to be able to do here is going to be.

17:09 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Now, in addition to this new dark look, there are even more new ways to adjust how they look. I can bring up a new customization sheet, and now I can tint them all with color. All of this was predicted. Now, ios suggests a tint color that complements my wallpaper, or I can select any other color I want.

17:32 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I like it. I gotta say Now they really pop.

17:36 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
It's so easy to create just the right. Look Notice he used the action button to change to dark mode or want to go dark. Or style with color. There are so many possibilities to make your home screen truly your own. We're also bringing new. A lot of young people are going to love that, I guess.

17:52 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
They will. It'll be big.

17:54 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Helping you access many of the things you do every day even faster.

17:59 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
A whole bunch of new TikToks, which is more than that right.

18:01 - Leo Laporte (Host)
You know, the problem is I gave up, right, yeah, TikToks, which is more than that right. You know the problem is I gave up right. Yeah, I always wanted this years ago and of course Android did it.

18:08 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
And now, control Center isn't limited to just the controllers.

18:11 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Android lets you use different launchers.

18:12 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
I can swipe to multiple new groups of controls, like for media playback. You can see how beautiful this is. Another place for widgets and here are my home controls. It's so useful to have everything arranged for me like this. The control center does need to be a little bit better. That shouldn't be open. Let me close the garage.

18:29 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Oh no, His garage door was open. No, it's not.

18:32 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
And what's really great is I can get to any one of these groups with a single, continuous swipe.

18:38 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Oh, that's nice, I can get straight to my home controls, for instance. Oh, that's a good idea.

18:41 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Or write back up to yeah, you wouldn't think about it. To add more controls.

18:47 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
I can open up the new controls gallery, where I have so many options to choose from. We wanted to make Control Center more extensible than ever.

18:56
So now developers can include controls from their apps as well, like this one from Ford. Let's add that in. To lock and unlock your vehicle, I can adjust how my controls are laid out and resize them too. Oh, that's nice. Now I can cool down the car, just like that. So that's the new Control Center. To enable new controls in Control Center, we have a new controls API for developers. And that's not all. These new controls are also available from the lock screen, so you can swap a camera and flashlights for different controls People have wanted that forever.

19:35
Or quickly capturing the moment for your Snapchat. Oh my God, that's actually great, and you can even use the action button on iPhone 15 Pro to invoke these new controls.

19:45 - Apple speaker G (Announcement)
Another key part of personalizing.

19:47 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
iOS is about keeping you in control of your privacy, and iOS 18 gives you even more ways to control who can see your apps, how you share your contacts and how you connect to accessories, let's start with apps.

20:03 - Leo Laporte (Host)
But this stuff, this is getting so canned.

20:05 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
now it feels distancing, so they can look at a photo or play a game.

20:08 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I understand what you're saying I want to go back to live that they can't get into sensitive areas of our phone.

20:14 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
So this year we're giving you a new way to protect sensitive apps. He's really pushing this, really hard.

20:26 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
By letting you lock an app. It's just not distancing, so this is something that's always been possible with guided access.

20:29 - Leo Laporte (Host)
But now they're surfacing it.

20:32 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Which happens a lot. A lot of times, accessibility features make their way out.

20:36 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Like in search and notifications, so others won't inadvertently see sensitive information. This is also rumored. There may also be occasions when you want to hide an app that you don't want others to know is installed on your device.

20:48 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
For example, say you use a professional-grade spatial capture app to track your different hairstyles.

20:54 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
I mean, that's just good science, right? Well, anyway, say you use this app but you don't want anyone else to know. I liked it. It's goofy and over the top. Well, now you can hide it and put it in a new hidden apps folder. That's locked. We're also adding new ways to control how you share information with apps, starting with contacts. Today, when you give an app access to your contacts, it can learn about all the people you've added over time In iOS 18, we're putting you in control. That's good.

21:24 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
So this is like what they did with photos, where you could choose which photos an app has access to. Now they're doing it with contacts.

21:29 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
When you pair accessories, an app may ask for Bluetooth and local network access, but also gain visibility to all the other devices on your network, from your computers and TVs to your door locks and blood pressure monitors. This is nice. Now developers can offer you an intuitive new way to pair your accessories that keeps your devices private and makes pairings easier. Next up, we have big enhancements to the apps we use to stay connected, starting with Messages. To tell you more, here's Roenick.

22:04 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
Messages is central to how we communicate with the most important people in our lives. So in iOS 18, we're giving you all new ways to express yourself and stay connected. How about on RCS? Let's start with tapbacks. Tapbacks are one of the most popular ways to express yourself in messages and people love them.

22:23 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
That's a Slack emoji reaction. This is a huge for people who don't know what tap love them.

22:25 - Leo Laporte (Host)
That's the Slack emoji reaction. This is a huge For folks who don't know what tap backs mean. I notice everybody's using these Ooh they're in color.

22:30 - Apple speaker C (Host)
Yes, Finally, we can do all emoji.

22:34 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yes, it's about time. This is a pathetic.

22:40 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
When you don't want to forget to send that friendly reminder Schedule.

22:45 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Sorry, that's so exciting, oh my, when you don't want to forget to send that friendly reminder on the birthday text schedule. You can schedule your message to send later.

22:48 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
Oh my God, yes, we're also giving you more ways to express your tone.

22:50 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Messages is probably one of the apps people spend the most time in right Full italicized underline or striped to any text.

22:57 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
And when formatting's not enough, we're introducing a new way to visually amplify your messages with text effects.

23:03 - Leo Laporte (Host)
This is their way of staying ahead of RCS, of course, bring your emoji to life.

23:10 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
You're just blown away by a stunning photo. You can express yourself in all new ways with text effects. Some words and phrases automatically surface. A suggestion, so you can quickly select one and send it. And you can also add one of the many new effects to any text. Oh, that's cool, that's nice, wow, nice. Last, there's a new way to stay connected whenever you don't have Wi-Fi or cellular service. We're using the same groundbreaking technology that gave us emergency. Sos via satellite to bring you messages via satellite.

23:45 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Now you can use the satellite capabilities on iPhone 14 and later to connect to satellites hundreds of miles above the Earth to text your friends and family when you're off the grid All right from the Messages app.

23:55 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
Once you're connected, you'll be able to use key iMessage features like sending and receiving messages, emoji and tap backs, because iMessage was built to protect your privacy. Imessage is sent over satellite, are end-to-ending encrypted wow good. And if you need to text people not on iMessage, we're supporting sms messaging via satellite too.

24:15
And now let's talk about another app we use to communicate mail gets no rcs we're giving you a new way to stay in control and manage incoming email, with on-device categorization that organizes your messages and helps you stay up to date across all of your accounts. The primary category enables you to focus on what matters most Emails from people you know and time-sensitive messages. The rest of your email will be organized into new categories like transactions for receipts and order confirmations, updates for newsletters and social media of messages.

24:44 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
The rest of your email will be organized into new categories. It looks like.

24:45 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
Google Inbox.

24:45 - Apple speaker C (Host)
For receipts and order confirmations Updates for newsletters and social media notices and

24:50 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
promotions for marketing and sales messages.

24:53 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And these categories do more than just sort your mail.

24:57 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
We've also created an elegant new digest view that pulls together all the relevant emails you've received from a business to make interacting with these messages even easier. For instance, it can bring together all of your flight information from United so you can get to it in one place. You can quickly scan snippets of each message to see what's new and explore what you're interested in.

25:17 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
There are going to be so many bugs in this.

25:18 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
If you want a sender to appear in another category, you can recategorize them.

25:24 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Well, that's worthless. It's worse than worthless.

25:27 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
It's just as easy.

25:29 - Leo Laporte (Host)
And, of course, you can always see all of your emails in one place.

25:34 - Apple speaker H (Announcement)
Categorization will be available later this year.

It is expensive, Continuing on our journey to replace your physical wallet, we're introducing Tap to Cash a quick and private way to exchange Apple Cash without sharing phone numbers or email addresses Fantastic.

26:22 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I was surprised. Someone I didn't expect to know about it knew about it and was like, hey, do you have a newer phone? I was like, yeah, oh well, let's just do this. And I thought you know how to do that.

26:32 - Leo Laporte (Host)
That's great. I know it is kind of hidden, isn't it?

This is in response to the Steam Deck. They realize people want mobile gaming.

27:37 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Where we relive our most precious memories and adventures photos. Our photo libraries contain all of the big and small moments in our lives, but as we capture so much and our libraries grow bigger by the day, how can we keep it all organized so we can appreciate all those moments and easily get to the good stuff? Ios 18 brings the biggest redesign ever to the Photos app. To tell us more about the all-new design, here's Shelf.

28:05 - Leo Laporte (Host)
It's interesting they're doing the all-new before the AI.

28:08 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Do not download this beta people. You don't want your photos to get messed up.

28:12 - Apple speaker J (Announcement)
It makes it super easy to find photos fast, so you can spend less time searching and more time enjoying your memories. Let me show you. This new design is gorgeous, feels familiar and it puts everything you want right at your fingertips. Does it look like a real hand?

28:26
The app has been unified into a single view with the photo grid at the top and your library organized by theme below. The photo grid is a great place to view your entire library. When you want to quickly jump back to specific dates, you can use months and years views at the bottom. Specific dates you can use months and years views at the bottom. I have a lot in my library, so it's great that this filter button lets me quickly narrow it down to specific types of content, and now I can even filter out screenshots to enjoy my photos clutter-free. We know that it can be tough to keep our ever-growing libraries organized, so we've built on the amazing intelligence in the Photos app and created a space below the grid that makes it easy to access the photos you care about most. We call these collections. With collections, you can browse by topics like time, people, my favorite memories definitely to choose which category or collections.

29:24
Let's go back and check out Recent Days. Just even the UI Recent Days organizes photos by each day with clutter like receipts filtered out. Here are my photos from earlier today. You'll see an auto-playing view of all the photos at the top.

29:38 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I can swipe between days like this. It is true that we're using the camera on the phone as a way to record stuff more and more, as opposed to just photos.

29:46 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And I can share the whole collection with just a tap Much of mine is just different photos that are reminders of things when I want to find a specific person in my library.

I recently saved the places I've been and even an album of my favorite climbs, and we have one more new space to make the photos app your very own and enjoy your best moments. If you swipe right from the grid, you'll find the new carousel which highlights your best content in a beautiful poster-like view Photos you've marked as favorites are here, and so are featured photos.

31:04 - Leo Laporte (Host)
This really all of this they really needed to do.

31:05 - Apple speaker J (Announcement)

31:07 - Leo Laporte (Host)
This must have been in the works for a while.

31:09 - Apple speaker J (Announcement)
Here I've added a favorite trip to Crater Lake. Each day the carousel surprises you with a new set of photos to enjoy for each of these, and that's a quick peek at the new photos app.

39:47
Because Apple Watch can track key vitals while you sleep, like heart rate, respiratory rate and wrist temperature, it can give you a deeper understanding of your body and help you identify when something might be off. So, with WatchOS 11, these metrics are the foundation of the insightful new Vitals app, where you can check in on your daily health status and explore your most important health metrics with just a glance. You can also see how your metrics relate to your typical range, which is determined from your own historical information and an algorithm developed using real world data from the Apple Heart Movement Study. For additional insights, your metrics will be highlighted when they're outside of your typical range with details on what's changed over the last week, and when multiple metrics are out of range, you'll be notified with a tailored message to help you understand how these changes may be linked to other aspects of your life, such as alcohol elevation changes or even illness.

To support you during this important time, the health app will display your pregnancy across all charts and prompt you to review things like your high heart rate notification threshold, since heart rate often increases during pregnancy. Those are some of the advances in health.

And last year we introduced the Smart Stack. It's another way to keep you connected to important information with just a scroll of the digital crown. This year, it becomes even more intelligent by automatically adding new widgets right when you need them, like the Precipitation widget to alert you before it rains, or the Translate widget for when you're traveling somewhere new. I still don't like that smart stack view on the Apple Watch.

42:17 - Apple speaker I (Announcement)
Yeah, I haven't gotten used to it to this day.

42:21 - Apple speaker M (Announcement)

You mean shafts I?

44:29 - Mikah Sargent (Host)

44:57 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
This is like when the author has to write the last book at the beginning of the next book, so that she remembers everything Like new ways to personalize your home screen, customize control center.

45:07 - Leo Laporte (Host)
You're 43 minutes in and they haven't said AI once. They have not.

45:11 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
They've mentioned a couple of times Intelligence.

45:12 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
They said Exciting new ways to get things done.

45:16 - Leo Laporte (Host)
This might be an interesting way to do it.

45:17 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
It's not to call it AI An update to apps designed for the distinct capabilities of iPad oh. Call it AI Update to apps designed for the distinct capabilities of iPad. Oh, apps are fundamental to the iPad experience. In iPadOS 18, we're making them even better, starting with a new floating tab bar which makes it easier to navigate to different parts of an app and keeps your content edge to edge. In apps like Apple TV, I go full screen.

45:40 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I really don't like how these things pop up.

45:42 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
The tab bar morphs into the sidebar. If you use a specific tab often, you can customize the tab bar to keep your favorites with an easy reach.

45:51
Yeah, exactly this redesigned experience works in apps across the system. We've also made it easier to browse your documents in apps like Pages, keynote Numbers and Swift Playgrounds, giving each app a distinct new look. And throughout your experience you'll discover refined animations. You'll notice them as you open files or preview them with Quick Look, and they smoothly zoom into view. Or when the tab bar elegantly morphs into the sidebar and back Across apps. Animations will feel even more responsive and for developers, all these new elements are available as APIs to adopt in your apps too. Now let's take a look at updates to SharePlay and Freeform.

46:36 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
One of SharePlay's best features is screen sharing.

46:39 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
It's a great way to help friends and family from afar and we're making it better in two ways. Oh, screen sharing is good. Some updates there so that you can help people. Now you can tap and draw on your screens, tell the screen what they should do on theirs. Okay, that's a good thing, and if you need to assist more directly, you can ask for permission to remotely control their iPad or iPhone. Yes, control the screen.

46:57 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Yeah, this is good and this is in FaceTime, basically, yeah, yeah, I hope that helps.

47:03 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
That will be a big help for me, and Freeform adds scenes, an all-new way to select sections of a board, to present them one by one. Oh interesting. Next, we want to talk about a feat that some may have concluded must be a mathematical impossibility. No, it's not, because it's coming to me. We're bringing Calculator to iPad.

47:21 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Whoa.

47:22 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
That's right, we're bringing calculator to iPad. By leveraging what makes iPad so unique it makes solving math easier than ever Solving math. I can solve math I can solve all of math Updated to take advantage of a larger iPad display, along with some new tricks like histories and unit conversions. The buttons are even bigger, but the real magic of calculator on iPad is unlocked when you use it with your Apple Pencil an iPad superpower. Apple Pencil has changed the way you can take notes, draw and even design with iPad.

47:52 - Apple speaker D (Announcement)
And now it's changing the way you do math with a feature.

47:56 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
We call Math Notes. Let's see it in action with Jenny.

48:01 - Apple speaker N (Announcement)
I'm so excited to show you the new Math Notes experience. I get to it by just tapping the new calculator button right here, and with my Apple Pencil I'll just start writing out expressions like I would on a piece of paper. As soon as I write an equal sign, calculator immediately solves it for me and even shows me the results in handwriting, like my own when I make a change the results update live.

48:30 - Leo Laporte (Host)
And I can go beyond basic math with all of the same functions from the scientific calculator.

48:36 - Apple speaker N (Announcement)
I can save my math notes and come back to them later if I'm working on different things, like here, where I'm working on a budget for my team's upcoming table tennis tournament, since I'm in math notes. I can sum these costs quickly by just drawing a line underneath them.

48:54
It's so natural, math notes are also really powerful when it comes to more complex math. Here I have a physics problem my teammate and I are working on. We're calculating the maximum height of a table tennis ball when I hit it with different speeds and angles. Math notes supports variables, so I've declared a few here.

49:13 - Leo Laporte (Host)
So they really have improved calculator quite a bit. This is calculator still Wow.

49:19 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
I love that it does it in your handwriting.

49:21 - Apple speaker N (Announcement)
If I change one like the velocity of my shot, it'll change the related results too. Wow, that's cool. Okay, this is really cool.

49:32 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I love this for when I'm doing math related to hanging things on the wall or creating something. It's like a spreadsheet.

49:40 - Apple speaker N (Announcement)
I have an option to create a graph. That's really cool. This is pretty neat. This is a handwritten spreadsheet, basically, and if I'm curious how the height will be impacted by the angle of my shot, I can hover my pencil over the angle and adjust it to see how it affects my graph in real time.

49:54 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Wow, okay, that's really cool.

49:55 - Apple speaker N (Announcement)
It's an easy way to explore equations in math. Okay, whoa, and that's just a quick look.

49:59 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Sorry, just a quick look. That's amazing. Math notes are perfect. Yeah, that's actually super cool Working through a problem set.

50:06 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
It's a handwritten spreadsheet, or just tackling the math we run into day to day. And this all works in notes too Cool when you need to crunch numbers. Notes has all the new math capabilities from Calculator. Oh, I love it. Just as we've reimagined math on iPad, we've also reimagined handwriting in Notes with a new feature called SmartScript.

50:27
Notes already has great handwriting features like the ability to select and copy your writing, or even make it straighter. With SmartScript, we're making handwriting your notes smoother than ever. It starts with improving the appearance of your writing as you write how rude, how rude. My handwriting is fine. I think that's really interesting. Oh, yes, it cleans it up. Oh, I love this.

50:59 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Oh, I don't know if that was better yeah.

51:03 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Wow, it's still your own writing, but it looks smoother, straighter and more legible. Smartscript further accelerates your writing flow by making handwriting just as flexible as typed text. Now you can just paste typed text into a handwritten note and it will appear in your own style. Spellcheck works just as you would expect and fixes mistakes in line when you decide you need to add to something you've already written just tap and hold with your Apple Pencil and your text will flow out of the brain.

51:29
If you want to erase something, you can just scratch it out. Like the Newton. Smart Script makes your handwritten notes more effective, fluid and easier to read. And with other enhancements to type notes, including collapsible sections. It's never been a better time to be a note taker. Yeah, they're doing some great improvements to it, and that's iPadOS 18. This is to sell it at the schools but every student should have one of these. That's amazing.

51:56 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I just really want Markdown supported notes though.

51:59 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Yeah, you're old Matt man. Forget Markdown, man. Now you have handwriting. Let's talk about Mac.

Distracted briefly from their marathon hacky sack session, they stumbled into their minibus and wove a trail toward the Sierras, eventually rolling to a stop in a beautiful national park. Staring skyward up the towering trunks surrounding them, they felt a deep kinship with anything that could get that high. They knew they'd found their spot. Welcome to macOS.

Okay, let's talk intelligence One hour in.

01:06:09 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Privately and securely, simply and easily.

01:06:15 - Leo Laporte (Host)
We've been doing this for years, people.

01:06:17 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
There you go. Elements in generative intelligence and large language models offer powerful capabilities that provide the opportunity to take the experience of using Apple products to new heights. So as we look to build in these incredible new capabilities, we want to ensure that the outcome reflects the principles at the core of our products.

01:06:41 - Leo Laporte (Host)
It has to be powerful enough to help with the things that matter most to you. They're going to position us as private, secure AI.

01:06:48 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
That's why it took us longer because we're going to do it the right way. It's going to be done exceptionally well.

01:06:54 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Most importantly, it has to understand you and be grounded in your personal context, like your routine, your relationships, your communications and more. And, of course, it has to be built with privacy from the ground up Together. All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence, it's personal intelligence and it's the next big step for Apple Personal intelligence.

01:07:22 - Leo Laporte (Host)
That's a good way to position it. Artificial has always been a bad part of that phrase.

01:07:29 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I agree, personal intelligence, and that's you know the rag, yeah, right, yeah.

01:07:36 - Leo Laporte (Host)
So this it's going to be interesting how they position this compared to how Microsoft positioned, recall, same idea.

01:07:43 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Apple intelligence.

01:07:45 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Introducing Apple intelligence than compared to how Microsoft positioned. Recall Same idea Apple intelligence. Introducing Apple intelligence, the new personal intelligence system that makes your most personal products even more useful and delightful. To tell you all about it, here's Craig. Here's Sam Rodman.

01:08:00 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Craig's been doing a lot of heavy lifting.

01:08:02 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
today had a no surprise. This is a moment we've been working towards for a long time. We're tremendously excited about the power of generative models, and there are already some really impressive chat tools out there that perform a vast array of tasks using world knowledge, but these tools know very little about you or your needs.

01:08:25
With iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia we are embarking on a new journey to bring you intelligence that understands you. Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that puts powerful generative models right at the core of your iPhone, ipad and Mac. It draws on your personal context to give you intelligence that's most helpful and relevant for you. It protects your privacy at every step and it is deeply integrated into our platforms and throughout the apps you rely on to communicate, work and express yourself.

01:09:01 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Let's take a closer look at Apple begin the second hour.

01:09:05 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Incredible capabilities. Then we'll tell you about its unique architecture and after that, we'll show you how it elevates so many of your everyday experiences. Let's begin with capabilities Apple intelligence will enable your iPhone, ipad and Mac to understand and create language, as well as images, and take action for you to simplify interactions across your apps. And what's truly unique is its understanding of your personal context.

01:09:35
Language and text are fundamental to how we communicate and work, and the large language models built into Apple Intelligence deliver deep natural language understanding, making so many of your day-to-day tasks faster and easier. For example, your iPhone can prioritize your notifications to minimize unnecessary distractions, while ensuring you don't miss something important. Apple Intelligence also powers brand new writing tools that you can access system-wide to feel more confident in your writing. Writing tools can rewrite, proofread and summarize text for you, whether you're working on an article or blog post, condensing ideas to share with your classmates or looking over a review before you post it online.

01:10:18 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
It's the integration at the system level that makes this so important. We already have all this.

01:10:20 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Across mail notes, safari pages, keynote and even your third all this. This is what Microsoft did. In addition to language, apple Intelligence offers a host of capabilities for images, from photos to emojis and GIFs. It's so much fun to express ourselves visually, and now you can create totally original images to make everyday conversations even more enjoyable.

01:10:44 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
And because Apple Intelligence understands the people in your photo library.

01:10:48 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
you can personalize these images for your conversations, so when you wish a friend a happy birthday, you can create an image of them surrounded by cake, balloons and flowers to make it extra festive. And the next time you tell mom that she's your hero, you can send an image of her in a superhero cape, to really land your point. You can create images, unique smiles, sketch, illustration and animation, In addition to messages. This experience is built into apps throughout the system, All of the functionality that's existed, but they're putting it inside the Apple dome right, and that's what's under the dome.

01:11:31 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Especially for the people who aren't going out to those places to get it.

01:11:36 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Now it's just going to be there at the fingertips With the apps you use every day, and we have designed Apple Intelligence so it can tap into these tools and carry out tasks on your behalf. So you can say things like pull up the files that Jaws shared with me last week, or show me all the photos of mom, olivia and me this is really interesting or play the podcast that my wife sent the other day. We're designing Apple Intelligence to be able to orchestrate these and hundreds of other actions for you People trust Apple unlike.

01:12:05
Microsoft While saving time. There's one more critical building block for personal intelligence, and that's an understanding of your personal context.

01:12:17 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Apple Intelligence is proud of your personal information and context.

01:12:20 - Apple speaker I (Announcement)
Yeah, that's right, it was considered creepy, but I think it's not going to be this time.

01:12:25 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
As well as to reference the content on your screen.

01:12:27 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
We're kind of primed for it and it's also a deep trust that people have, it seems, in this company and I wanted it.

01:12:35 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
I thought it would be so useful.

01:12:36 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
One of my meetings being rescheduled for late in the afternoon and I'm wondering if it's going to prevent me from getting to my daughter's. Wow, this is what I want.

01:13:00 - Leo Laporte (Host)
That's what everybody wants. It was popping up airplane tickets when you arrive at the airport.

01:13:02 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Things like that. This is what I want. Understanding this kind of personal justice is essential for delivering truly helpful intelligence.

01:13:04 - Leo Laporte (Host)
It was popping up airplane tickets when you arrive at the airport, but it has to be done right has to be done right.

01:13:08 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
You should not have to hand over all the details of your life to be warehoused and analyzed in someone's AI cloud. Yes, with Apple intelligence, powerful intelligence goes hand in hand with powerful privacy. Let me tell you more about its architecture and how it's built, with privacy at the core. This is very smart.

01:13:28 - Leo Laporte (Host)
The cornerstone of the personal intelligence system is on-device process.

01:13:34 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
We have integrated it deep into your iPhone, ipad and Mac and throughout your apps, so it's aware of your personal data without collecting your personal data. This is only possible through our unique integration of hardware and software and our years-long investment in building advanced silicon for on-device intelligence.

01:13:55
Deeply integrated generative models require immense processing power and with our most advanced Apple silicon the A17 Pro and M family of chips we have the computational foundation to power Apple intelligence. This personal intelligence system is comprised of highly capable large language and diffusion models that are specialized for your everyday tasks and can adapt on the fly to your current activity.

01:14:20
It also includes an on-device semantic index that can organize and surface information from across your apps. When you make a request, Apple Intelligence uses its semantic index to identify the relevant personal data and feeds it to the generative model so they have the personal context to best assist you.

01:14:40
Many of these models run entirely on-device. There are times, though, when you need models that are larger than what fits in your pocket. Today, servers can help with this, but traditionally, servers can also store your data without you realizing it and use it in ways you did not intend. And since server software is only accessible to its owners, even if a company says it's not misusing your data, you're unable to verify their claim. That's right. Or if it changes over time, that's right.

01:15:09
In contrast, when you use an Apple device like your iPhone, you are in control of your data, where it is stored and who can access it, and because the software image for your iPhone is accessible to independent experts, they can continuously verify its privacy. We want to extend the privacy and security of your iPhone into the cloud, to unlock even more intelligence for you. So you have to have an iPhone 15 or later for this Private cloud compute.

01:15:37 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Private cloud compute allows.

01:15:39 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Apple intelligence to flex and scale its computational capacity and draw on even larger server-based models for more complex requests, while protecting your privacy. These models run on servers we've especially created using Apple Silicon. Yeah, this was all. These Apple Silicon servers offer the privacy and security of your iPhone from the silicon on up, draw on the security properties of the Swift programming language and run software with transparency built in. This sells a lot of iPhones. When you make a request, apple intelligence analyzes whether it can be processed on device. If it needs greater computational capacity, it can draw on private cloud compute and send only the data that's relevant to your task to be processed on Apple Silicon servers. Your data is never stored or made accessible to Apple. It's used exclusively to fulfill your request and, just like your iPhone, independent experts can inspect the code that runs on these servers to verify this privacy promise. That's interesting. In fact, private cloud compute cryptographically ensures your iPhone, ipad and Mac will refuse to talk to a server unless its software has been publicly logged for inspection.

01:16:54
Wow, this sets a brand new standard for privacy and AI and unlocks intelligence you can trust. So that's a look at the powerful capabilities of Apple Intelligence and its groundbreaking privacy protections. Now we'd love to show you how it will transform your apps and experiences across iOS 18, ipados 18, and macOS Sequoia. So once again, iphone 15 or later.

01:17:22 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Oh Siri, that's a new logo for Siri. I want to see the new Siri.

01:17:28 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Look at that.

01:17:29 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Here's Kelsey to tell you more. Infinite Siri.

01:17:32 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Today, Siri helps you get everyday tasks done quickly and easily, in fact, siri users make 1.5 billion voice requests every single day. 13 years ago, we introduced Siri, the original intelligent assistant, and we had an ambitious vision for it. We've been steadily building towards that vision and now, thanks to the incredible power of Apple intelligence, we have the foundational capabilities to take a major step forward so we can make Siri more natural, more context-relevant and, of course, more personal to you.

01:18:09
Right off the bat. You'll see Siri have got a new look. Let me show you.

01:18:13 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And try to address that.

01:18:14 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
When you talk to Siri, you'll notice it's more deeply integrated into the system experience with this elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of your screen, and you can speak to Siri more naturally, thanks to richer language understanding capabilities and mom pants. Even if I stumble over my words, Siri understands what I'm getting at. What does the weather look like for tomorrow at Muir Beach? Oh wait, I meant Muir Woods.

01:18:39 - Apple speaker G (Announcement)
The forecast is calling for clear skies in the morning near Muir Woods National Monument.

01:18:44 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Let me tell you what I found on the web.

01:18:45 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Sometimes it takes me a beat to figure out what I actually want to ask Siri, and now it follows right along.

01:18:52 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Siri also maintains conversational context so I can follow up and say create an event for a hike there tomorrow at 9 am.

01:19:01 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
So she said there Hike is scheduled for 9 am Schedule a hike there. It had that contextual. I didn't have to mention Muir Woods. Again, Siri understood what I meant when I said there. There are also certain times when you might not want to speak to Siri out loud. What's great is that now, at any time you have the option to type to Siri.

01:19:21
With just a double tap at the bottom of the screen, I can quickly and quietly ask Siri to set an alarm. Nice, this is interesting because this was always a problem with voice assistants doing it in public or in an office.

01:19:37 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Hey, I want to do this. Instances doing it in public or in an office.

01:19:42 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
One of which is its extensive product knowledge. Siri now holds a great deal of information about features and settings, but only about Apple. And can answer thousands of questions when you want to know how to do something on your iPhone, ipad or Mac.

01:19:57 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I'll be curious. Wait, that's my job, even if you don't know exactly what a feature is called.

01:20:01 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
You can just describe it and see how finding info you're looking for, like this how can I write a message now and have it be delivered tomorrow? Siri understood what feature I was referring to, and now I have step-by-step guidance on how to use the new send later feature in messages.

01:20:16 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
They just Sherlocked iOS today.

01:20:17 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Everything I've showed you so far will be available from the moment you start using Apple Intelligence, and over the course of the next year we'll be rolling out more features that make Siri even more personal and capable.

01:20:28 - Leo Laporte (Host)
They're being fairly judicious For one.

01:20:30 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Apple Intelligence will provide Siri with on-screen awareness, so it'll be able to understand and take action with things on your screen. Google does this as well, for example say, a friend texts you his new address Right from the message's thread you can say add this address to his contact card. I've yet to see it really work. And Siri will take care of it.

01:20:48 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Ah, very nice.

01:20:49 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Siri will also understand more of the things you get done in your apps and, with new orchestration capabilities provided by Apple Intelligence, siri will take actions inside apps on your behalf. Siri will have the ability to take hundreds of new actions in and across apps, including some that leverage our new writing and image generation capabilities.

01:21:10 - Leo Laporte (Host)
They haven't said if they're using their own model or OpenAI's model, For example, you'll be able to say show me my photos of Stacey in New York wearing her pink coat.

01:21:18 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, I think that's probably last.

01:21:20 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Then you might say make this photo pop and Siri will enhance it just like that.

01:21:25 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Oh, that's kind of cool and Siri will be able to take actions across apps.

01:21:29 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
So you could say add this to my note with Stacy's bio and it will jump from the photos app to the notes app to make it happen. Wow, this is going to bring us closer to realizing our vision in which Siri moves through the system in concert with you. This is made possible through significant enhancements that we're making to App Intents, a framework that lets apps define a set of actions for Siri, shortcuts and other system experiences, and this won't be limited to apps made by Apple For developers. They'll be able to use the App Intents framework to define actions in their apps and tap into Apple Intelligence too. So you might ask Siri to take a LightTrails video in Pro Camera by motion, or ask Siri to share a summary of your meeting notes in an email you're drafting to a teammate in Superhuman. And this is only the beginning. Siri will be able to understand and take more actions in more apps over time. There's one more set of really cool and useful capabilities coming to Siri Thanks to Apple Intelligence.

01:22:34
It has awareness of your personal contacts, and Apple stock, having hit a bottom, is coming back up With its semantic effects, such as photos, calendar events and files, Plus information that's stashed in passing messages and emails, like hotel bookings, PDFs of concert tickets and links that your friends have shared. Siri will find and understand things it never could before.

01:22:56 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
And with the powerful privacy protections of.

01:22:58 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Apple Intelligence. Siri will use this information to help you get things done without compromising your privacy of Apple Intelligence. Siri will use this information to help you get things done without compromising your privacy. You'll be able to ask Siri to find something when you can't remember if it was in an email, a text or a shared note, like some book recommendations that a friend sent you a while back or for times when you're filling out a form and need to input your driver's license. Siri will be able to find a photo of your license, extract your ID number and type it into the form for you.

01:23:28
I want to show you one more demo that will give you a sense for how powerful Siri will be when it draws on the personal context awareness and action capabilities built into Apple intelligence.

01:23:40 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Five bucks swing from this morning.

01:23:41 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Imagine that I'm planning to pick my mom up from the airport and I'm trying to figure out my timing. Siri is going to be able to help me do this so easily. Siri, when is my mom's flight landing? What's awesome is that Siri actually cross-references flight details that my mom shared with me by email with real-time flight tracking to give me her up-to-date arrival time. The waist is a little high. What's our lunch plan? So am I.

01:24:04
I don't always remember to add things to my calendar and so I love that Siri can help me keep track of plans that I've made in casual conversation, like this lunch reservation my mom mentioned in a text. How long will it take us to get there from the airport? I haven't had to jump from mail to messages.

01:24:20 - Leo Laporte (Host)
That's nice If this all works. That's the problem.

01:24:25 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
If it all works, it's very impressive and, honestly, it probably would have resulted in a call to my mom could be addressed in a matter of seconds.

01:24:31 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Oh, thank God.

01:24:32 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
That's just a glimpse of the ways my Siri is going to become more powerful, yeah what's the deal? Thanks to Apple intelligence and the stock just dropped because they love their moms Very interesting.

01:24:52 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
I remember when those features first came to the Mac and no one used them. Like bring up files.

01:24:59 - Apple speaker O (Announcement)
Show me some images More places throughout the system where Apple Intelligence simplifies and accelerates your tasks.

01:25:05 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
More experiences.

01:25:07 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
Apple Intelligence unlocks incredible new ways to enhance your writing. Whether you're tidying up your hastily written class notes, ensuring your blog post reads just right on WordPress or making sure your email is perfectly crafted, let's use mail to take a closer look at how the system-wide writing tools can help you communicate even more effectively. Rewrite gives you different versions of what you've written, so you can choose the one you like best.

01:25:34 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Friendly, professional, concise. This is all stuff that Copilot does in the office.

01:25:38 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
This is great for making sure your cover letter for that job you're excited for lands perfectly.

01:25:43 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Does Copilot do it?

01:25:44 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
on device Suggestions are shown in line you can go with a combination of flow and wording that works for you. Rewrite also helps you get the tone right.

01:25:53 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Have you ever rewritten a word?

01:25:54 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah save money and save time.

01:25:56 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
This might not go over well. Well, now you can change the tone of that response to your colleague to make it sound more friendly, professional or concise.

01:26:06 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
It is imperative that we adhere to the established naming protocol. For example, you can invite your friends to a get-together with a one-of-a-kind invitation.

01:26:13 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Make this read like a poem.

01:26:15 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
Who could say no to that? Oh dear, Another way writing tools can help you is with Proofread.

01:26:20
Yeah, oh dear, another way writing tools can help you is with Proofread yeah, this is so obviously AI With Proofread you can nail grammar, word choice and sentence structure to put your best foot forward. Grammarly is going to help. You can review suggested edits and their explanations individually, or accept them all with a click. And if you're about to email a project status that has gotten quite long, use summarize to bring out the key points and then add them as a TLDR right at the top.

01:26:47
In addition to mail, you can access writing tools system wide, nearly everywhere you write, including third party apps.

01:26:54 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Apple intelligence also powers smart reply in mail, for example, when you need to do this on a hardware device that as opposed to say in mail, for example, when you need an RCPTune event, you'll now see suggestions for your response based on email, if you say you'll be there.

01:27:07 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
Mail identifies questions. You were asked in the invite.

01:27:10 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Oh, that's nice so you don't forget any of the questions that were asked.

01:27:14 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Your draft response incorporates your answers, so with just a few taps, you're ready to send it off with all the answers. Finally, that's great.

01:27:21 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
Finally, let's talk about how Apple Intelligence helps you stay on top of a busy inbox. We all deal with sorting through a ton of email every day, and now it's easier and faster than ever to browse your inbox Instead of previewing the first few lines of each email that don't always convey the most useful information you can now see summaries visible right from your email list, so without even opening the email, you'll know that your team is meeting on Thursday to discuss a new design.

01:27:50
And if you jump into a particularly long email when you're in a hurry, you can tap to reveal a summary at the top of the email and cut right to the chase. We're also elevating priority messages. Apple intelligence can understand the content of the email and cut right to the chase. We're also elevating priority messages. Apple Intelligence can understand the content of the emails that we send.

01:28:06
Determine what's most urgent and surface it right at the top, like a dinner invite for tonight or a boarding pass for your trip this afternoon, and deep understanding of language extends beyond your inbox into more places Like your notifications. First, just like in mail, your priority notifications appear at the top of the stack, letting you know what to pay attention to at a glance and to make scanning your notifications faster.

01:28:33 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
They're summarized.

01:28:35 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
So when the group chat is blown up, you can quickly see that Savita booked the house and Leah is arriving early.

01:28:41 - Leo Laporte (Host)
In fact, the ideal with Greg would be you don't have to say it, just knows.

01:28:47 - Apple speaker L (Announcement)
Called reduce interruptions. It understands the content of your notifications to selectively surface only the ones that might need immediate attention. Like a text about today's daycare pickup From catching up on priority notifications to staying present and focused, with reduced interruptions, and refining your words and writing tools. It's like a focus mode. Apple Intelligence helps you save time in so many ways. Now over to Cyrus to show you how it unlocks new ways to express yourself.

01:29:14 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Express yourself.

01:29:16 - Apple speaker C (Host)
Apple Intelligence enables you to create fun original images, whether you are sprucing up a keynote for class or trying to land an idea while collaborating in freeform and third-party apps can offer this experience too, like in Craft, where you can create a delightful image to add to your document. Let's take a closer look at how Apple Intelligence helps you express yourself visually in messages. One of the most fun ways to communicate in messages is with emoji.

01:29:43 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
There's that custom emoji.

01:29:44 - Apple speaker C (Host)
But even with thousands of emoji to choose from. There are times when you can't quite find the right one for how you feel. Let's see how the market reacts to this so we're introducing Genmoji. Genmoji Leveraging the power of Apple intelligence. You can create Genmoji on device right in the kitchen, genmoji. Genmoji Genmoji.

01:30:06 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Oh, look at that Alligator and a surfboard.

01:30:11 - Apple speaker C (Host)
I'm sorry, t-rex on a tutu On a surfboard Squirrel DJ. Wow, wow. Or complaining about the rowdy squirrel right outside your window Squirrel DJ. And because Apple Intelligence is aware of who's in your photo library, you can simply pick someone and create a Genmoji that looks just like them. These are perfect for sharing with friends as a sticker, reacting to messages with a tap back, and you can even add Genmoji inline in your messages. Let your imagination run wild as you create just the right Genmoji. And because it's so much fun to use images to express ourselves, we went even further with a new system experience we call Image Playground.

01:30:52
This is a new way to create playful images in just seconds. It's so easy to use and we built it right into apps like Messages. To get started, you can choose from a range of concepts like themes, costumes accessories, places and more. When you select them, they get added to your playground. No need to engineer the perfect prompt. In a few seconds you'll see.

01:31:19 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Apple Intelligence creates a preview of what your image could look like, and then it shows you an image based on those three tabs you'll see more previews.

01:31:27 - Apple speaker C (Host)
you can swipe through. This all happens on device, so you have the freedom to experiment and create as many images as you want. Love, that it's all on device.

01:31:35 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I'm going to pay extra for it.

01:31:37 - Apple speaker C (Host)
To your friends with just the right image.

01:31:39 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Yeah, I could cancel about three AI subscriptions.

01:31:42 - Apple speaker C (Host)
You could just type a description to add it to your playground Four and you can easily adjust which style you want to use.

01:31:51 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I need AI to figure out what I've subscribed to and choose from animation sketch or illustration oh interesting.

01:31:59 - Apple speaker C (Host)
Whichever suits the vibe of your conversation. So this is where Apple knows. If is a problem for Google with safety and stable diffusion and good journey. And a Microsoft designer actually. So they must have some interesting safety story To add you or one of them to the image you're creating.

01:32:30 - Leo Laporte (Host)
So then it's, your friend wearing sunglasses surrounded by tomatoes. I think that's fun. We'll see People might tire that pretty quick.

01:32:36 - Apple speaker C (Host)
Maybe not. With an intuitive experience to create totally original images and so many ways to express what you want, the Image Playground is going to make everyday conversations a whole lot more fun. In addition to messages, this experience is also available in apps like Keynote Pages and Freeform. To make it easy to experiment with creating images, we've also built a dedicated Image Playground app, nice. You can use it to try out styles, play around with different concepts and make something to share with friends in other apps or on social media. And for developers, they can integrate the new Image Playground experience in their app too. With a new API, with the Image Playground experience and Genmoji, you can create fun and delightful images right where you need them. With a new API, with the Image Playground experience and Genmoji, you can create fun and delightful images right where you need them. Now here's Seb to show you more experiences, enabled by the powerful capabilities of Apple Intelligence.

01:33:33 - Apple speaker P (Announcement)
With the ability to deeply understand and create images, apple Intelligence unlocks some fantastic new experiences, like a brand new tool in the Notes app that we call ImageWand. Imagewand can transform a rough sketch into a polished image that complements your notes and makes them more visual. And it's available right in your tool palette.

01:33:56 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
So I can draw a horrible photo of a chicken and then it can be like, oh, you wanted a chicken.

01:34:00 - Apple speaker P (Announcement)
You can circle your rough sketch using Apple Pencil to open up an image playground within your note. Imagewand uses on-device intelligence to analyze your sketch and words and creates an image for you. Wow, what's really fun is that you can even circle empty space and it will pull out context in the surrounding area to suggest the ideal image to go with your note. It has never been easier to make your notes more visual and engaging. Apple Intelligence also helps us make the most out of our ever-growing photo libraries. First, we have an update to photo editing. We've all had that time when we thought we got the perfect shot and realized later, it wasn't quite perfect Now the new cleanup tool will identify distracting objects in the background, so you can make them disappear.

01:34:49 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Ah, but what Google Photos doesn't do?

01:34:51 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
is identify them right.

01:34:52 - Apple speaker P (Announcement)
Yeah, just automatically Plus searching for photos and videos is much more convenient because you can now use natural language phrases so you can search for really specific things, like Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt that's nice, or Katie with stickers on her face. Searching videos is also more powerful with the ability to find a particular moment in the middle of a video clip, so you can go right to the relevant segment when you search for that video of Maria cartwheeling on the grass.

01:35:21
This is easily the most useful kinds of AI as opposed to just a chatbot. Apple intelligence also makes it so much more delightful to create a memory movie Today, when you want to use your photos and videos to create a movie yourself, like for your fishing trips with your kids.

01:35:34 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
It can take hours.

01:35:37 - Apple speaker P (Announcement)
You have to search through tons of photos to pick out the best ones, figure out how to arrange them and hunt for the right music. Now, thanks to Apple Intelligence, it is super easy to create a memory about the story you want to see.

01:35:53 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Just type a description hey, I'm learning to fish.

01:36:00 - Apple speaker P (Announcement)
Set to a fishing tune.

01:36:04 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Let's go fishing.

01:36:12 - Apple speaker P (Announcement)
I wonder if the music is generated or if it found a song in Apple Music Library. So now I can watch a wonderful memory that starts with my son practicing on the dock, transitions to fishing on the boat and finishes with us holding the price cap Is that an AI fish? And all of this is set to the perfect song selected from Apple Music. Like all of Apple intelligence, these updates to photos are built on a foundation of privacy.

01:36:40 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
So your photos, videos, VHS, for example, or anyone else.

01:36:44 - Apple speaker P (Announcement)
With endless possibilities. It is so much fun trying out different ideas, Sparkles in the wild, Revisiting our most precious moments.

01:36:52 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And now back to Craig, that'll be fun to do. I think Apple's aced this. Apple intelligence is truly unique and I would understand, because that's what matters.

01:37:01 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
It's threaded the needle. What?

01:37:01 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
can you do with?

01:37:02 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
it yeah.

01:37:03 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I don't care. All the capabilities, I want to know what I can do with it.

01:37:05 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
It enables so many more helpful features. It actually matters to people. For example, in the Notes app, you can now record and transcribe audio to capture detailed notes.

01:37:15 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Oh my God that when the recording is finished, apple Intelligence generates a summary to help you recall the key points at a glance.

01:37:22 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Recordings, transcriptions and Apple Intelligence-powered summaries are also coming to the phone app. What and when you start a recording in a live call, participants are automatically notified. Oh good, so no one is surprised. Apple Intelligence is available for free with iOS 18, ipados 18, and macOS Sequoia, bringing you personal intelligence across the products you use every day no subscription. Still, there are other artificial intelligence tools available that can be useful for tasks that draw on broad world knowledge or offer specialized domain expertise.

01:37:57
We want you to be able to use these external models without having to jump between different tools, so we're integrating them right into your experiences and we're starting out with the best of these the pioneer and market leader ChatGPT from OpenAI, powered by GPT-4.0. First, we built support into Siri.

01:38:18
So Siri can tap into ChatGPT's expertise when it might be helpful for you. For example, if you need menu ideas for an elaborate meal to make for friends using some freshly caught fish and ingredients from your garden, you can just ask Siri. Siri determines that ChatGPT might have good ideas for this. Do you want me? To use ChatGPT. It presents the answer directly.

01:38:41
You can also include photos with your questions. If you want some advice on decorating, you can take a picture and ask what kind of plants would go well on this deck. Siri confirms if it's okay to share your photo with ChatGPT and brings back relevant suggestions. That's a good way to do it. It's a seamless integration. In addition to photos, you can also ask questions related to your documents, presentations or PDFs. We've also integrated ChatGPT into the system-wide writing tools. With Compose you can create content with ChatGPT, for whatever you're writing about.

01:39:13
Suppose you want to create a custom bedtime story for your six-year-old who loves butterflies and solving riddles. Put in your initial idea and send it to ChatGPT to get something back she'll love. That's a very smart way to do this and it's not our fault if it's weirdly.

01:39:38
What For free? Your requests and information will not be logged and, for ChatGPT subscribers, you'll be able to connect your account and access paid features right within our experiences. Of course, you're in control over when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared. Chatgpt integration will be coming to iOS 18, ipados 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. We also intend to add support for other AI models in the future. Now let's talk about developers and how they can integrate the experiences powered by Apple intelligence into their apps. We've updated our SDKs with new APIs and frameworks. For example, developers can add the image playground experience to their app with just a few lines of code. This means that an app like Craft can help users create images to make their documents much more visual, and writing tools are automatically available within apps that use the standard editable text view that use the standard editable text view. So, without any development effort, an app like BareNotes can automatically allow users to read rice proofread and summarize notes.

01:40:47
Plus, we're building many more ways for users to take action in apps with Siri. If a developer has already adopted SiriKit, they'll see immediate enhancements for many of Siri's new capabilities without additional work. We're also investing deeply in the App Intents framework to connect the vast world of apps with Apple Intelligence. We're defining new intents across our operating systems and making them available to developers, starting with these categories. These intents are predefined, trained and tested so they're easy for developers to adopt. Using new app intents, an app like Darkroom will be able to use the apply filter intent to give users the ability to, say apply a cinematic preset to the photo I took of Ian yesterday. These are just a handful of the updates coming to our platform SDKs so developers can add intelligent and useful features to their apps case. So developers can add intelligent and useful features to their apps. We'll share more details in the platform State of the Union later today, like how we're bringing generative intelligence to Xcode for developing apps using.

01:41:49
Swift and SwiftUI, with features like on-device code completion and smart assistance for Swift coding questions. So that's Apple intelligence with tremendous benefits for developers and users. This is AI for the rest of us.

01:42:07 - Apple speaker E (Announcement)
Personal intelligence you can rely on at work, home and everywhere in between.

01:42:13 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
Apple intelligence harnesses the power of our most advanced silicon and will be available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPad and Mac with M1 and later.

01:42:22 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
This is AI. For the rest of us it's smooth.

01:42:24 - Leo Laporte (Host)
It's fully integrated.

01:42:25 - Apple speaker B (Announcement)
US English this summer. We're bringing it to users in beta as part of iOS 18, ipados 18, and macOS Sequoia this fall, with some features and additional languages and platforms coming out over the course of the next year. Us English in beta this fall. This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter of personal intelligence Intelligence built for your most personal products your iPhone, ipad and Mac. Intelligence grounded in the things that make you you. I wonder if this beta will have any intelligence in it and intelligence available to you system-wide so you can get things done in the way that works for you. We are just getting started and I hope you are as excited as I am for the road ahead and now back to Tim.

01:43:11 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Maybe I'll start talking to Siri again.

01:43:12 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Thank you, craig, and thanks to all of our presenters. It's been an exciting day of announcements. We shared powerful new features and advancements to our six incredible platforms, and the introduction of powerful new Apple intelligence features to iOS 18, ipados 18, and macOS Sequoia make these releases game changers. These releases game changers built in a uniquely apple way. We think apple intelligence is going to be indispensable to the products that already play such an integral role in our lives, and we have a big week ahead for developers and I think that's really key this afternoon with the platform state of the union.

01:43:57
We also have over a hundred technical live forums, in-depth consultations and Q&As with Apple engineers. All of this content is available online for free for developers. We're excited to provide developers with the amazing new OS platforms and technologies we announced today, as well as tools and resources to help them do the very best work of their lives. Thank you so much for joining us. Let's have a great WWDC.

01:44:32 - Leo Laporte (Host)
So really, I think Apple did what they needed to do. There goes the plane Now will they get sucked up into it?

01:44:40 - Apple speaker F (Announcement)
I think Apple did what they needed to do Shot on iPhone.

01:44:42 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Edited on.

01:44:42 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Mac Shot on iPhone, edited on Mac. I like it. Shot on iPhone. That's interesting, not on Vision Pro. People keep waiting for a Vision Pro version.

01:44:50 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, they want to see the Vision Pro Maybe that'll be after this one, since they've got the Canon cameras ready for it. And Black Magic design Anyway, what do you think for it? And black magic design Anyway, what do you think? I'm very excited about some of the new features.

I am very impressed with how Apple has worked toward integrating AI at the system level across the different apps, and I think that that's going to be an opportunity for I think it was Oprah who said a billion phones in people's pockets, y'all. That's access to generative AI for those people who use that in a way that, as Apple called it, ai for the rest of us. It was important to show the experiences of using the AI, versus just here's a tool, see what you can do with it, actually showing some real life instances of how the tech can be helpful. Plus, I mean, there was just a lot. Honestly, I'm impressed with how much they packed in. I will say a little underwhelmed with the updates to VisionOS. There was what I thought. I thought there was going to be a lot more about VisionOS and VisionOS 2 to kind of try to make that product even more exciting.

01:46:04 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I think Apple is going to start to distance itself from you think so, yeah, but I've thought that all along. The most important thing from my point of view is Apple was faced with a real challenge today. They had to respond to what Google, microsoft and OpenAI have been doing and yet still keep it Apple, still keep it private and secure, and I think they threaded that needle. I think they showed, in fact, that they've learned from the stumbles from Google and Microsoft and OpenAI and they've realized that what they really are is a product company and they've productized this in a unique way that will be, in the long run, very good for them Because, notice, this really locks you into an Apple ecosystem and all along, you know, people have been saying well, this is free, it's going to cost them a lot to do this. It probably is. I think Apple's willing to spend a lot of money to have a position here. They have to spend a lot of money to have a position here. They have to spend a lot of money to have a position here and be positioned for future products. Notice the enhanced capabilities of the AirPods Pro. They didn't mention AirPod Max at all or regular AirPods. It was all about AirPods Pro, I think, going forward Apple, you know, vision Pro and spatial computing are going to be, I think, a little bit of a detour, but there's some value to them from that platform in trying new ways to take the phone, the laptop and the tablet into new realms. They're going to have to take AI with them Very smart to bring it. Apple. Intelligence is still isn't it, but it's not artificial, it's apple, and I think that that's that's what steve jobs would have done too. That's exactly what he would have done too. So, um, I think this is probably very good news for apple.

01:47:53
Now the proof is in the pudding. We we won't see these tools in action for a while. And will they live up to the hype is a big question. You know siri did not live up to her hype, no, no. So they've got to make this stuff work. If it works like they showed, that's always a big if you know, when google shows stuff at google io, you already know it's not going to work like they show it. Apple's's a little bit better at that If it lives up to its promise. I think they are incredibly well positioned, better than any other platform. Look at the stumble with recall that Microsoft had. Yeah, they pulled back and they're going to make it more secure. But the problem is people don't trust Microsoft. They already got a black mark. They completely stumbled on that. Look at how Apple has handled essentially the same offering in it and they've handled it, I think, very well. There will not be any pushback on privacy or security.

01:48:49 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, and that's the thing too right, because recall also an on-device feature yeah, but people didn't like how it sounded, how it seemed, and, yeah, it's kind of wild to see a lot of those same features being suggested in a different way. I think it helps that they didn't say we're taking screenshots every five seconds or whatever it was that it's more of. Just this has a general awareness of what's going on on your device and can pull from the mail, can pull from this, can pull all these things together. And then, honestly, it's about usefulness.

01:49:21
I think, with recall, where they failed was showing what it does and how it can be helpful to a person. There wasn't enough of that. It was just saying here's a feature that we made and it will help you recall things. That's not enough. Apple said look, you were in a conversation with your mom and instead of having to look at the email and then remember to go to the calendar and then go back to the text message and scroll back three times, you talk to Siri and Siri is going to show you things right there on the screen and at the same time, yeah, it's going to do everything else.

01:49:55
There was probably, if we go back, more Sherlocking in this WWDC than I think we've seen in WWDCs in a long time. That struck me too.

01:50:06 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Apple's going to do so much stuff. Look at Notes. Notes has suddenly become it was really not calculator alone, it was Notes and Calculator and Notes has suddenly become the tool for a student Unbelievable they showed some AAA gaming. Ubisoft said, yeah, we've developed an engine for metal and we're going to roll it out everywhere. And Apple has a really good story there because Apple's on the same silicon platform on all its devices, all its devices.

01:50:36 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
So suddenly you're able to release on the iPad at the same time as you release on the Mac. That's very clever, but that very clever totally, totally agree with you.

01:50:44 - Leo Laporte (Host)
They focused on fun stuff you can do with this. They didn't focus on the machine is so smart, the machine is almost intelligent.

01:50:54 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, and it was it. Everybody else is providing this blank canvas and saying you can do everything with it. Apple's not doing that. They're saying here are some specific things that are just iterations on what you already do they're very careful not to say agi, yeah, this is where everybody else has gone wrong.

01:51:12 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Right, this is, this is this is what's really scary people out. Right, yeah, I go. I don't want that Apple's very friendly fuzzy, warm cozy.

01:51:21 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Look at these cute little emoji you can make.

01:51:26 - Leo Laporte (Host)
One of our discords, lockmaster, says yeah, apple sure locked AI. I think that's true. I think that's true. Apple said this is how AI should be and I will be very interested to see. But I think most consumers will go yeah, that's fine, I'm good with that, in fact. Fact, I'm going to get the new iphone because my old iphone won't do it. Yeah, there'll be. I imagine some people saying, hey, how come not on the uh iphone, uh 14, but and probably technically it could do it on the iphone 14. But apple's very smart.

01:51:57 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
They're saying, nope, you're gonna have to have the newest iphone especially because they want you to do as much on device before the system says oh, I've got to punt this to the servers Right, which they're calling private cloud compute.

01:52:08 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Very smart Gurman, to his credit, got everything. Yeah, we didn't see. Anything we didn't expect was how cleverly and smoothly Apple would position all this, in complete contrast to what Google, microsoft and OpenAI.

01:52:27 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I think it was a bit of a masterclass in marketing and in just communication in general, because if I could go back and just watch the part of the video where Craig Federighi lays out the four different categories that they're covering and goes through it, and I love it was like we're going to say what's happening, we're going to provide just a little taste, then we're going to talk about how we're doing it before we give you these experiences that you're going to be very excited about.

01:52:59
It was all laid out. It was what was it? It was capabilities and then architecture and then experiences, and I thought that was so well done to make sure that you felt comfortable as you rolled into what was going to be possible.

01:53:15 - Leo Laporte (Host)
They showed some beautiful stuff with Apple Watch. They didn't really compare how Apple Watch or talk about Apple Watch and AI, but I think a lot of things like training load will be very much AI driven.

01:53:27 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I'm sure, and also the fact that the glances are going to be updated intelligently and in real time, so it will show you different glances based on what you're doing. And so I think that that's going to be all, and again, that's what Tim Cook pointed out. We've been doing this forever. Now we're doing oh, also the redesign.

01:53:49 - Leo Laporte (Host)
He did say that, didn't he? Yeah, you know, we've always had this stuff built in. We just were cagey, we're coy about it.

01:53:57 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Those redesigned photos faces absolutely all the AI stuff. Yeah, Boy about it. Those redesigned photos faces absolutely all the AI stuff. Yeah, Providing you with intelligent choices and giving you text that looks great. I don't know, as you and I both mentioned, we don't ever really use those faces. No, I like the info. I like as much information as possible.

01:54:13 - Leo Laporte (Host)
I think that they have very much proven that they are brilliant marketers, that they know their audience very well, that they know how to lock people into Apple products, and I think they're showing at this point I think unsaid is there's a significant investment this is not going to be cheap a significant investment in this stuff building new servers, centers. You know paying I presume paying OpenAI and perhaps Google for these services, but they want to be well positioned for future products and I think they own this. I think they did Sherlock AI. I think that is really the bottom line here and it's, as you said, a masterclass in how to do it. Well, that's the Apple WWDC. We will not cover the platforms talk, but they are going to do that after lunch. You might want to watch that if you are interested in the details, the nitty-gritty. Certainly developers will want to watch this and I think it's going to be very interesting for developers because I think they're going to say we have to use these APIs, we have to use these.

01:55:22 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
APIs. Yeah, the keynote did not touch on a lot of the APIs, or if it did, it just briefly touched on them. That is where the state of the union is really going to come forth and say here's how you'll be able to use all of this, how you'll be able to integrate it, and the great thing is when and this is what Apple has always tried to encourage is for developers to as much as possible make use of the kind of default built-in aspects Because, as they showed on stage, if your text entry areas of your app are standard, then the writing tools for generative will all just work.

01:55:57 - Leo Laporte (Host)
It'll all just work. That's one thing Apple's always done well, from the very first Apple Macintosh in 1984 is they've had these great APIs built into ROM that developers say, well, that makes it very easy to make a text editor, for instance, and then they just get whatever the features Apple adds to those ROMs down the road. Apple's very, very good at that. It's hard sometimes to get developers to follow your lead. Vision OS hasn't really drawn in a lot of developers, right.

01:56:26 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Interesting to see how much they talked about enterprise there. I think they might be a little bit going the way of the HoloLens. That's exactly what Microsoft is Focusing toward that enterprise.

01:56:37 - Leo Laporte (Host)
So it's not always a given that developers will come, will listen and say, oh yeah, I'm going to do that. I think here, if you have an Apple app of any kind, you are going to make sure that you work with those APIs. You're going to want that. It'll be really interesting to see how, because a lot of this is going to rely on everything working, not just the Apple apps, but everything working.

01:57:00 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yes, you want to have your app feeding information into what did they call it Specifically it was the personal context, but it wasn't that there was a name into that semantic index, so that stuff that is happening in your app from your users gets sent to Siri's awareness or Apple intelligence awareness, because otherwise you're going to get left out and you don't want to be left out.

01:57:36 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Apple just Sherlocked AI and made it theirs, and really actually an impressive feat of juggling. I thought this was going to be a very big challenge for them. Stock market's not quite warmed up to it yet. Maybe some profit taking, I don't know. The Apple stock is down a few percentage points almost 2%. But you know what I think? Tomorrow the stock will come back with a bang because I think investors are going to realize all of that. All that money you've been pouring into AI, you should really be pouring into Apple intelligence. I think they did it right. Thank you everybody for joining us for this. Apple sorry. Twit News broadcast Apple's WWDC keynote for 2024. No products, no products.

01:58:26
We heard there wouldn't be any there I don't know why they closed the store, they, they reopened it almost immediately after the keynote ended. I guess they wanted you to pay attention. That was the message. Pay attention, uh. But you know what? There wouldn't be any new products to announce on this, I think no, this is this was their new product. This was a big new product that's going to affect every product. And now come fall when they do have new hardware, new iPhones and new Macs, I think they're going to have a very good quarter.

01:58:52 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
It was great to see, though, that the M1, through the M4, will all be able to take advantage.

01:58:56 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Yeah, huge Thank you all for joining us. Micah will be back tomorrow for iOS. Today, I think you'll have a few things to say as well as MacBreak. Weekly and then MacBreak Weekly at 11 am Pacific. This is an interesting new world we're moving into and Apple, which has been laggard up to now in the world of AI, has, I think, planted a flag.

01:59:19 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
They said let's watch and see how everybody does it wrong, which is an Apple move.

01:59:24 - Leo Laporte (Host)
Yeah, very exciting stuff. Thanks everybody, we'll see you next time. Bye-bye, bye-bye.
