Pick: Sling TV

Andy Ihnatko's pick of the week on MacBreak Weekly 482 is Sling TV. This is the service that gives you live cable channels without an actual cable subscription. For $20 a month, you get a basic account with the Food Network, TNT, TBS, Lifetime, Disney channel, ESPN, CNN, and more. There are add-ons you can get as well to get HBO, sports packages, more movie channels, and other language channels.

Sling TV gives you access to these channels from anywhere in the world streaming over the internet with apps for iOS, Android, and Mac. It's very stable and streams in HD, but it doesn't support AirPlay nor does it have an Apple TV app at this time. The other difficulty is that there is no DVR function, and you can only watch the TV channels as they air live. You also won't have the ability to sign into the individual channel's apps using your Sling subscription like you would a regular cable subscription. Considering the price, however, it is a great way to get some of the channels you might miss from having a traditional cable subscription.
