iOS Pick: Minecraft Pocket Edition
Leo Laporte's app cap on iOS Today 283 is Minecraft Pocket Edition. This is a great way to get introduced to the world of Minecraft. For a long time this Pocket Edition was a limited version of the real Minecraft game, but now it is more fully featured.
For those who don't quite understand Minecraft yet -- this game is all about creation. It's like modern day Legos, where you can build and create things using the various blocks. It also can be played with friends on a server. There's Survival mode and Creative mode. In Survival mode, when night falls, bad guys come out and can hurt you. Creative mode just lets you build without any threat. Everything in the game is a resource, and you can use those resources to advance.
This is a great way for kids to spend time with one another, and it's also a great way for parents to connect with their kids. Unlike more violent first person shooter games, this is a game that's very creative and requires a considerable amount of thought.
