net@night 114: The Netflix Prize

Hosts: Amber MacArthur and Leo Laporte

Guests: Chris Hefele, Jeff Howbert, and Joe Sill of the Netflix Prize leading team The Ensemble

The Netflix Prize seeks to substantially improve the accuracy of predictions about how much someone is going to love a movie based on their movie preferences. Improve it enough and you could win one million dollars. The winning team was a massive collaboration between more than 30 people who came together for just the final month of the contest. We talk with three members of the team about the final heart-stopping minutes of the contest.
