Mac Pick: LaunchBar 6

LaunchBar 6

Jason Snell's pick on MacBreak Weekly 408 is the new LaunchBar 6 for Mac. This is a replacement for Apple's built in Spotlight search. It's designed to allow you to keep your hands on the keyboard to quickly launch files, perform tasks, and get information. Version 6 of LaunchBar introduced a beautiful new interface, and has a set of themes to choose from. It also expanded its indexing rules to include Finder Tags, iCloud Tabs, your Safari Reading List, and more.

LaunchBar 6 acts as a personal assistant, which can manage events, reminders, and access contacts. It can browse your file system and copy, move, or rename files and folders. It also lets you access your clipboard history, has a calculator, and can do desktop and web searches.

While OS X Yosemite's Spotlight will add some of LaunchBar's functionality, LaunchBar 6 still can do more. It supports script-based actions that can be installed to fit your specific needs. You could write your own extensions in AppleScript, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, PHP, and more. Or you could install actions written by other users in the LaunchBar Extension Gallery.

LaunchBar 6 costs $29 for a single user license, but you can try it free for 30 days.
